Kwikee Step Repair
UPDATED…
Unfortunately, it looks like the Kincor kit I mention below is no longer available- Kwikee changed the motor enough that it is not possible to take it apart- the unit is not sealed.
An alternate repair method using an Auto Parts store motor is discussed in this RV.NET forum posting.
Original post below——————————–
Electric steps are one of those luxuries that are a near necessity- in a Motor Home, you often need a step to enter, and yet once you are in, you cannot push a manual step in, and when you are in the rig, pulling the step out is impossible.
The vast majority of electric steps are manufactured by the Kwikee Company. These steps are pretty darn reliable, if the maintenance is performed as required, which is easy- simply lubricate the hinge points with a good quality lubricant. Kwikee sells a very good “Kwik-Lube”, which is a kind of “penetrating grease” that starts out thin, but thickens after a few minutes. Others have recommended motorcycle chain lube- I’ve never tried it, but it sounds like it would be good- a good quality lube which does not attract dirt.
But… even with the best maintenance there are a couple of problems that can crop up. I dealt with the most common today. The step was stuck in the retracted position, so… first I check the voltage to the unit. Next, check the grounds and connections (older models have a 4 way connector which has a tendency to corrode- Kwikee changed that a few years ago- the new ones are much more reliable.
So, I remove the motor assembly from the step frame- 4 bolts and the pin which attaches the arm to the step- the 4 way connector, and the connector between the electronics and the motor. Once the motor is off, it still will not run- even hooked directly to a battery. So, I next remove the actual motor from the gear case (3 screws)- as soon as I pull the screws, the motor case rotates at least 20 degrees, indicating it was in a major bind.
This bind comes from the way the motor is designed. The motors are actually power window motors, and they have a small worm gear on the motor output shaft which engages in a large gear (#2), which in turn is coupled to an output gear(#3). This coupling is made by a triangular cutout in gear #2 which contains three small round plastic inserts that a triangular part on gear #3 fit in to.
The round plastic parts are there to absorb the shock when the step hits the end, so that the other gears don’t simply shatter. This works well- until the step gets some age on it, and these small plastic parts get oval, rather than round. This allows the motor to bind up, and because the step electronics sense current draw, and the step motor is drawing a lot of current trying to get out of the bind, the steps get stuck.
Luckily, a company named Kincor has made a gear replacement kit, which includes gear #2, the round plastic parts and a supply of high quality grease. The kit part number is BD52, and it retails for around $30 (a fraction of what a new motor assembly costs).
A quick Google for more information yielded an FMCA Magazine writeup on this kit- along with a picture and company contact information.

Thanks for the tip. My Kwikee step stopped working yesterday. My mobile office is a 2000 Minnie Winnie. I’ll let you know how if this works out for me. Since the rig turned 5 years old, seems I am becoming quite the “RV tech” myself, whether I like it or not! I’ve replaced the air conditioner and the refrigerator and now the hot water heater and the step are out!
How do I get the motor off? With the step stuck in the up position, the motor is not really accessable…
Just completed a repair on a Kwikee step motor, sure wish I had found this site beforehand it would have been of great assistance to me.
To late for me too…
Bought a new controlbox, and gear.
works fine, but the purple wire meant to connect to porch light, does not get “hot”, no 12volts, door open or closed.
Any ideas on this?
porch light coming up as soon as door opens looks a good idea.
Wonder if I could use the wire going to understep light.
Control box should have a diode build in to prevent 12 volt going back if porch light is on from another source.
your opinion would be appriciated…
Will
Hi Willy,
The purple wire is an input- if you feed it *from* the porch light, it will turn the under step light on when the porch light is on.
They really don’t make it very clear.
– Chris
Hi Chris, shame on me….
Indeed it is an input…
I would have loved it the other way, it seems more logic.
Another issue: the magnet for the reed switch is to strong, I have to open the door almost all the way before the switch works.
Kicor, the company that makes repair kits for kwikee steps, cannot be reached. Anyone know any other place that makes the replacement gear kit for the motor unit?
Sorry Chris: That typo should be Kincor.
thanks
look under steps….
What tells the motor to stop when step get to the down position.
Hi Joe,
The circuit board senses the current draw of the motor and shuts it off- that way if something is blocking the steps, it will still shut them off before burning out the motor.
This is also why regular lubrication is so important.
–Chris
Thanks Chris for that information, I have looked in the gear box, everything look ok. However when I open the door the steps come down almost to the bottom then start jiggling back and forth, Same when I tell it to retract. I suspect the motor, I removed the complete system and hooked up to a fully charged battery, motor ran to stop then started jiggling as above. Any thoughts on the problem? Thanks Joe
MY STEPS WILL GO DOWN BUT THEY WONT GO BACK UP.THE MOTOR IS FINE WE HAVE ALREADY CHECKED IT OUT. CAN ANYBODY GIVE ME ANY SUGGESTIONS?
Donna yours sounds like a control box problem , i just removed the complete unit off my dads just to get to the motor and gearcase because his froze in the up position and binded up , very simple fix either way , your control box unplugs from everything and is pretty simple to rehook , good luck!
Joe- it does really sound like the motor, but I would still go through all of the connections- especially if yours has the “old style” rubber 4 pole connector and you tested with it.
Otherwise, it does sound like the motor.
Donna- gr8jeep is right- it does sound like the control box, but I would disconnect the door switch wires and try hooking them together and unhooking them to see if it could be the door switch or wiring. The door switch actually just grounds out- they are either grounded for open, or grounded for closed, depending on the age of the unit.
–Chris
Just found this location and hope someone can give me some ideas on my problem. My steps work as they should except on occasion they will bind in the down position. To get them working again I have to remove the cotter pin and clevis pin, run the motor then reinstall the clevis and cotter pins and all is fine for a while. This seems to happen when I set at one location for an extended period. I had thought it was due to the maladjusted cam stops but that does not seem to be the case.
Hi Fred,
I buy from a distributor named DTI, who has a huge online parts catalog. If you follow this link, and put in the part number 9534 (which is the replacement for 9554), you should see your part.
Note- I do get a commission from sales through that link.
–Chris
I’ve got a 93 Pace Arronw with a two step Kwikee electric step. Owners manual list as a #860. I need the “Linkage Assy. for Motor Assy. Part list shows to be part number 9554. Anyone have an idea where I can locate this part. I’m new at on-line inquiries and am hoping for help. Fred
I Have 1990 airex with 2 steps. The step goes down OK but comes up only 1/2 way up. Please help. Thank You
Hi Ed,
For Kwikee steps, that pretty much has to be either a lubrication issue or an electrical connection issue. I would lube the steps well, check the ground connection, and check the 4 wire connector which should be close to the step control box- though it is often wrapped in tape.
– Chris
Bought a 97 Winnebago with the Kwikee double step. It didn’t work at all and it looked like it had been hit and bent. I took it all apart, made new pins, etc. The motor seemed to run fine, so I reassembled and tried. The steps came down fine, but would not always go up all the way. Got stuck about half way. After reading about this problem I figured it was the gears worn. Took the motor apart and noticed there was no pin from the casing through the smaller of the two gears. Obviously it was binding as I could see the gear was at an angle. Put a 5/16″ X 1″ pin through these two and that appears to have fixed the problem as the steps now work very smoothly both ways. The only way this might have happened is the pin had to be left out at assembly. Anybody ever hear of that?
I have a double step kwikee step-11 years old. It extends and retracts normally but when the door switch is turned off to allow step to stay in extend position while camping, it still retracts when the door closes. Removed switch and benched checked switch , it checked ok! what is the likely cause of malfunction.
Check your local auto parts store for window regulator gear plugs if they have failed. they
They are 3 round plugs like the Kinco kit without the gear.
Kragen Auto part #74410 found on the Help isle $12 out the door.
Hope this helps
I have a double step Kwikee 9 years old. It extends and retracts o. k., but when you
attempt to leave the step extended while camping by turning the switch off the step retracts
anyway. Sometimes it will stay out for a period of time, but most times it will just retract
on without touching it. Do you have any idea what the problem might be?
Hi Bobby,
I would start by checking the switch itself, and the wiring from the switch to the step control box for a short.
–Chris
Question re step 1983 single kwikee step my motor seems to be gone as think it overheated and seems dead , Ive had it apart cleaned it and hooked it to battery but doesnt want to go, can you get a motor anywhere as i wont be buying a new step
Im pretty mechanical any suggestions or should i just h-eve it.
DouTherm Furnace tips
I have a 1984 Beaver coach everything is top of line but as you know if you own an old RV you become a master repair man, Ive replaced fridge, hot water heater, fixed Duo Therm Furnace if any one has any questions on furnaces beleive me Ive had mine out 35 times until i realised you can hook up to most old BBQ tanks (same fitting) (old hose), anyway easier to figure out whats wrong once its out of the case ,if fan motor works and gas isnt comming on check rear fan sensor they bend real easy ,if bent wont turn on gas ,
if not that ,its either front heat sensor which you can change without pulling out,
If once hot stays off its front or rear sensor which you need to pull the inner sleve (the furnace) out of box ,it really only a couple screws in front and your wires, and gas line bends easy just dont kink the gas line , also If furnace is old I suggest you pull the whole Furnace apart Yes apart because both mine and the spare i have were full of mud (mud wasp) and bees nests,so could be dangerous if plugged up and running with no air ventilation (overheat fire),
Things You Need
Alot of Patients ,small socket,12 volt car battery, needle noose vice grips, Allen key to remove fan from motor, marette conectors ,propane tank and old hose as new ones have no fittings ,(pull one off a BBQ off side of road) ,
. Suggest you buy and old DouTherm about the same BTU all parts sensors will be same i bought mine 50 bucks not working (pull old one apart first so you dont learn breaking yours.)
1 Hook up to 12 car battery and touch thermostate wires together with out propane connected, Check Motor ,if it runns see if can slow it down by hand ,if its not strong it will stop carefull dont cut yourself, if not running full speed gas and spark might not come on, These motor are reliable but hard to pull apart, both mine and spare didnt work but brushes from one and everything else from other fixed it,i took emmery board to fan motorshaft after it was apart as it was rusted and created resistance. Youll will know if motors good if you grab shaft with cloth and it doesnt stall ,suggest stopping and starting motor several times to ensure working and strong .
2. gas sensor in rear fan housing (this sensor tells gas to come on but if bent the wind from furnace wont trip swich so make sure not to bent),
3 – check two heat sensors one in back by fan, one in very front
also clean furnace out this is a bit of work ,but well worth it, all the old ones are full of bees nests so clean it out,
I couldnt afford a 1000.00 for a new furnace, mine has worked like new since i simply fixed motor and replaced one sensor and cleaned it.
Sounds like alot of work but if your mechanical youll probly work harder to make 1000 bucks then youll still have to install anyway.
Also go to WalMart and for a buck each buy two drain screens (there20 bucks at RV dealer and baisically same sh… ), cover the furnace in and out pipes as most people use rvs seasonal and the wasps love thes furnaces
When you put furnace back in make sure you have no gas leeks by spraying some soapy solution on all fittings they will bubble if leaking (old furnaces have fittings on inside unlike new ones)be carefull,
Also they have the same curcuit board on both my furnaces but I havent experianced any problems at all ,they seem very reliable as older sh.. was made heavy duty
Good Luck
Dont have a melt down
email anytime hellsbells1tribute@yahoo.com
In checking out ths step I found that only the door switch
was abnormal. I get almost 0 volts when check testing Red wire
to Brown with the door open and 12 volts with the door closed.
This is the opposite of the tests in the manual. However if
one assumes the magnetic switch is normally open when the
door is open the voltage would be 0 when open and 12 volts
when closed. Is the manual in error? Looks to me like this
could be a controller problem. What do you think?
Hi Bobby,
Kwikee has changed the switch operation- older models used a white, “Normally Closed” switch, but they changed this to a black, “Normally Open” switch.
I would check the large 4 way connector and the ground connection carefully.
–Chris
Hi I have a 94 Fleetwood Bounder. It has 2 step Kwikee step. They have quit working
Where do I start.
Thanks
I am trying to find the Kincor web site or at least a telephone number. Anyone out there that can help me please email me at builders8@aol.com. Thanks so much
I have the Kwikee electric two step 35 series.
Hi Tom,
It appears that the gear kit is no longer available, unfortunately. I’m changing the post to reflect this.
–Chris
Is the 4 pole pigtail for testing the steop functions a standard part from auto store ,or a connector only available thru kwikie ?
Had the step problem several years ago on my ’92 dolphin, and again last week on my ’99 tropical; Very simple fix at little or no cost: get a length of 1/2″ nylon or delrin rod; remove motor assembly from step;(refer to kwikee ownwr manual); get into gearbox & remove three round pucks(they get distorted & are the cause lock-up of step). Replace with proper length of nylon/delrin rod, cut to length and lightly trimmed to fit in place of original pucks. Reassemble motor unit, apply 12v to check operation & re-install to step. PROBLEM SOLVED!
Sure glad I found this site. The last time my steps stuck down
I was working and didn’t have time to investigate. Fixed it this
time after reading this. I will definetly pay more attention to
lube after this. Thanks again. Tim
On my 03′ HR, my 3 step Kwikee steps seem to have striped gears by just hearing the motor
run with no rotation.
I took the steps off and removed the motor assembly. Is there anywhere I can fine the
inside drive gear, not the worm (its fine). Everyone wants to sell me the whole
motor assembly.
Its does to seem obvious just by reading I should have been oiling my moving hedges.
Thanks
I have a 23 series kwikee step assembly. The gear box that the motor bolts to is broken. Does anyone know where I can get just the gearbox? I’ve looked up different websites and can only fine a new assmebly with motor. My motor works fine. Any help is greatly appreciated.
I have a 91 Fleetwood Bounder by stairs quit so on the advice of Kwikee I was told to replace my controler #9513 with the newer #9506 controler this required new door switch install I have installed all the new parts I have power to the red wire, the white wire none to the yellow (override ) wire and the brown is hooked to the door sensor With the motor hooke directly to a battery it works properly in and out but with the motor hooked to the controler I can get no movement either way ( I do have the stairs unhooked pin removed) for this testing I have installed a jumper on the door switch Still no movement. Where do i go next?
[...] I mention below is no longer available- kwikee changed the motor enough that it is not possible …http://rx4rv.com/archives/11Kwikee Systems?2007. MultiAd, Inc. All Rights Reserved. Terms &amp Conditions [...]
I have a two step system.. It’s been acting up so I checked the door switch. The steps work sometimes, not others. I checked voltage and I’m only getting 10v to the switch (tested from the controller with ground). 12v at the understep light. Any ideas?
Have 2 step Kwikee, leaving for Lake George tomorrow, this am steps went down and before stoping in the full down position, retracted 2 inches, and kept going back and forth, any ideas?
my 2 step on a 2004 winnebago oprates fine except in the ign override mode. the 15 amp fuse blows after a few cycles. i have tried a 25 amp justy to check and the fusse blows too. any suggestions?
I had a new chassis battery installed in my 99 dolphin. The step was open and stayed opened, will not close since installing the battery. I have located the 5amp fuse, but keep blowing it when i install. The fuse is in the same compartment as the converter on a board with many more fuses. The step will move when i install the fuse but blow the fuse instanly an the step comes back out. Can anyone help? EMAIL ME AT rdbug57@aol.com thanks
I removed the four prong plug because of corrosion and wired it direct. I don’t know what I did because the step extends when I close the door and retracts when I open it. I was pretty impressed with myself when the steps worked but that only lasted until I discovered they worked backwords.
On find the Kincor kit to be no longer available I started
looking elsewhere and and found some parts that will probably
work. If your having some of the usual problems contact me @ ssiron@camalott.com
and maybe I can help.
Frank
PLEASE, SOMEONE TELL ME WHERE I CAN ORDER OR MAKE THE REPAIR ,THREE BUSHINGS THAT GO IN KWIKEE STEP MOTOR. REGARDS, BURL.
Linkage arm broke on my 32 series kwikee double step. Ordered part #9534. Received part yesterday, but curved arm is curved in the opposite direction of what I need and the photo in my manual also shows photo in opposite direction of part I received. I was not given the option of choosing left or right linkage when ordering. Is this a universal linkage that I can use on either side?
Thank you.
Hog
Hi Hog,
I’m not 100% certain, but I do not think there are 2 versions of this linkage- it sounds like you ‘lucked’ in to one that was assembled wrong.
@Chris,
Yeah, we called PPL and they took one out of stock and it was curved in the same wrong direction. So I cut the rivit off myself and reinstalled it correctly with a bolt. Checked clearances and all seems to be working fine. Was concerned at first –cutting up a $60 part, but all worked out. Thanks for getting back to me.
Gordy (Hog)
I have a double Kwikee step on a 1996 motor home, but the step was replaced and is only about 3 years old. Last year just before putting the RV in storage knowing the battery was going bad, I opened the door only to “hear” the step trying to run out (clicking sound), but would not because the battery was nearly dead. The step continued to “click” and I left it this way over night. After changing the battery out a few days later, the step now will do nothing.
I assumed I burnt the motor up…..or maybe a fuse. Any advice and thanks in advance…….
Norm-Pennsylvania
The link between the step and the gear was in a bind and would not move. I disassembled the link and now cannot get it back together so it will fit. Any suggestions?
I have a 2006 Fleetwood Discovery and the electric steps just quit working. Any idea what maybe wrong with them.

I have control unit 9513 and the resistor or diode at r 25 is missing looks like it may have shorted out and burned. do you have any idea what resistance or part no. this is . thanks harry
I have kwikee 2 step motor control unit #909513 which seems to not be working. Where can i find a replacement without buying a new motor set (which PPLmotors wants to sell me).
i have a 96 dolphin with a 39 series step frame and i am new to r v ing and would like to repair the two side frames to the step as they were bent in when they did not retract and struck an object causing them to bend toward the rear of the coach. can i purchase just the side rail frames.if so where
Hi John,
I’m, afraid the only option is to buy the entire step frame, which is the whole assembly minus the control and motor assembly.
My souces show that as being a Winnebego only step, though. You can search for parts at RV Dealership.com
I have a 2006 Winnebago Outlook , my Kwikee steps won’t deploy. I removed the pin and freed the binding condition. Worked well for a week then all of a sudden they went back to the not deploying condition. Need help in figuring out why this is happening. Both time it has happened was on the road with no particular incidents. Just opened the door and steps would not deploy.

Hi Joe,
I’m working on a post about this- many times the bind is caused by small pieces of plastic used as shock absorbers in the motor. The good news is these parts are available at most auto parts stores.
Give me a day or so to whip the post in to shape.
My steps all of a sudden stopped working while retracting. they were half way up and were ticking; sounded like stripped gears. took everything apart. worm gear and round gear fine but lots of blueish plastic powder was all over the gears. is this whats left of the “3 round rods”? did they disintegrate?
the plastic cushioning piece in the gear(attached to tne motor)disintrgrated causing my steps to do the “shuffle” went ot oreilly auto parts..got a matching windo lift motor for a ’87 to’92 lincoln continental..installed..fixed problem!!! kwikee will not answer nor return calls from individuals..they suck!!!
JUSTIN.. U R RITE!! mine did same thing!! went 2 O’REILLEY auto parts. got a rebuilt windo lift motor(power windows) that matched my motor..about 60$..problem solved! kwikee has not been answering or returning phonecalls to us “peon rv owners” dealers I have talked to say same! sorry way to run a business!!! TAD
I have a 1987 Allegro class A 27 foot. My step was replaced within a year or two after I purchased the motor home. The step has quit working. I took the motor and gear assemble off and ck it and it is working but it appears the controller is not working. Is there a replacement controller or do i have to buy the replacement kit which is a new motor, gear, and controller?
I also noticed that the unit is not wired exactly the way the book said to wire it. It has a 1 inch cubed unit in my storage area that has 3 wires going to it, but this is not shown on the drawings. It does not have the 2 wires, one from the battery and one from the on/off switch. It has 1 wire from the switch which is located on the dash and it has 2 source of power with one line going to the step. The second source of power is live only when the key is turned on. Could the problem be this box in the storage compartment? It is made by Bosch, says 12V 20/30A and some numbers below that.
I hope i have given you enough info to help me with.
It is great to find this forum! My Kwikee step (series 28) quit because the monoball seized up. I removed the motor, freed up the monoball and replaced the pin with a bolt. So far so good. Here’s my problem. I don’t see what stops the motor at the ends of its travel. If there are internal stops, I need to index the motor properly to have it stop and start in the right place.
I suspect the control unit actually senses overload and stops the motor, in which case there is no need to index the motor.
Can someone tell me if I need to index the motor and if so how? I agree that Kwikee is terrible; you can’t get through to them and their dealers are clueless. How come they have the market?
Thanks
I’ve got a 1996 Pace Arrow with a Kwikee double step. I just completed replacing the entire assembly (my gear was bad and the frame was rusty). Upon pulling out the old step assembly I shorted one of the wires and I’m sure I burnt a fuse. The problem is I can’t find the fuse. I’ve checked all three panels (coach, dash and engine compartment) and can’t seem to find it. Any ideas please e-mail me at quarter_miler@hotmail.com
My steps have stuck up 2 times in the last 3 months. The repair shop said it was lube issue so the lubed and unbound them and got them running the first time. I keep hearing about this clevis pin but looking under the steps can’t find it nor do i see how to remove the motor. I have a 2007 four winds hurricane there was nothing about the steps in any of the manuals except to state they were power steps. Where can I get a manual and parts blow up so i can fix this when it happens again
I had my 94 model RV serviced ,and when I picked it up, the steps were up and the step motor was running, The steps were jiggling back and forth about an inch forward and back, I pulled the motor off and tested it. When the motor stops, it starts jiggling. Is this a bad control unit or a bad motor? they are series 28 Kwikee steps.
I purchased a new set of kwikee series 32. I had the same steps on my MH before, so I am just replacing them. I have power to the steps, but the problems seams to be in the door switch. I don’t find how they are connected to the system. I would have thought it would work the way they were connected with the old step, but I try the red and brown wire with the door open or close and I get no power. I try with white and ground and get no power. To me the door switch would control this. Please give me some advise.
Reinstalled Kwikee double step unit after making repair to damaged step brackets. Reconnected wiring the same as they were when working fine. The motor works as I can get the steps to extend by disconnecting the brown wire thats connected to a door switch lead wire on the left side of steps. When I reconnect the brown wire to the said door switch wire they will retract. Though all tests seem to work voltage wise except for door switch test.
I have a 99 Itasca with double Kwikee steps, SN 207917
The step functions normally, retract and go out smoothly. One issue that started last trip was then step fully retracts, the motor continues to run for about 5 seconds, clicking and clunking like it’s still trying to retract the step.
Is there a switch that “tells” the motor it’s retracted so it stops, or is it part of the conrtol unit and there is something that makes contact to tell the motor to stop trying to retract the step?
Any ideas?
Thank you!
Hi John,
The circuit board is what stops the motor- it senses the current draw- so, if the motor doesn’t “stall”, it won’t shut off.
It sounds like you have some partially stripped gears.

Hi Chris
Thanks for the info on this website. My Kwikee 32 series step motor (Ass’y Part # 909502) had a broken field magnet and a damaged armature causing sporatic hanging and blown fuses. The motor was no longer available. I used the info from your site TAD’s research for another motor assembly _
“tad Reply: July 27th, 2009 at 10:19 pm – the plastic cushioning piece in the gear(attached to the motor) disintrgrated causing my steps to do the “shuffle” went ot oreilly auto parts..got a matching windo lift motor for a ‘87 to’92 lincoln continental”.
I paid $59.99 plus tax to O’Reilly’s for their item # 42-36 (passenger side window motor). It was modified to fit the existing Kwikee gear case. I now have a quiet operating step.
Thanks again for the help. Jerry
I’ve read through your site and don’t see the problem I’m having with my single step on a ’95 Georgie Boy. After sitting for a couple months, I got in to move the motor home and found the step would not retract. Put voltage directly to motor, nothing (standard so far). Pulled the motor apart, cleaned and lubed the steps, back together, put current to it, retracted perfectly, reversed current, extended perfectly. Plugged it into wires while fully extended (easier to access) and then closed the door… nothing. Opened the door, step extended out, closed the door, nothing, opened the door, nothing. Reversed the connection (opposite of what it was originally), closed the door, step retracted, opened the door… nothing. What the heck? I put a volt meter on it and when the door is opened, it sends negative current, when the door is closed it sends a split second of positive voltage and then stops… with load or no load, same thing. It has a magnetic switch but it seems like it’s clearly the control module, right? But can it be fixed or do I need to search for a new control module? Mine will be quite difficult to remove as the wires are quite well sealed thanks to undercoating. Thanks for any help you can provide.
I have a friend camped beside me who bumped his step when it was down broke the linkage arm. He checked the step it moves easy by hand, replaced the arm and it broke when he hooked up the wire from the ignition switch. The step worked ok before he hooked up the ingnition switch wire. He is going after a new linkage arm but is afraid he has a problem.
Our dog chewed the wiring. I have replaced and or reconnected everything but the step is not working and is in the down position. The under step light is not coming on either. Could this have blown a fuse?
Sounds like the fuse…we have two fuses in ours, one under the dash and the other on under the hood
after replcing the step motor with a ford taurus window motor all was good for months…now stoped working again light comes on under step, relay clicks when operating the door, ground good, 12 volts at 4 pin connector on white and red yellow has voltage when key is on, but get no voltage on yellow or red to motor. Tested motor works fine without controler.
So I guss I have tried everything and was wondering if I should just get a new controler my old one is orange with 9514 and after serching for hours looks like I found the replacement 909510003.
any comments would be helpful
I have double steps on my rig. The problem I am having is the steps won’t extend or retrack all the way automatically . They stop almost all way in or out and there is a grinding type noise when steps stop moving. I can pull or push ligthly on steps and they will go in or out the rest of the way but when movement has stopped there is still a grinding type noise. Help?????
I put a new magnet and sensor in my door; it is working backwards now. When door is closed, steps extend out. When door is open, steps retract. Switched wires around, makes no differnce. Called Kwikee several times with NO return call. Please help if this has happened to you. Any suggestions??
The switch you got was the wrong one, if the one you got is “NO” (normally open) then you need to get a “NC” (normally closed) magnet switch
Take the linkage off the step from the motor to find if the step is binding, the gear is binding or the motor is binding
Chris,
I have a Jayco 35 GS (07) with Kwikee 3 step unit. My steps will not extend or retract by use of the on board power switch. With switch of, steps should stay out, on the should extend & retract with the opening and closing of the main door or screen door. However, they operate when I have key in ignition in the one position.
So know the motor works, just not when I need it to.. (LOL).. Any suggestions?
Frank
Chris , I have a `97 country coach with a bo kwikee series 42 step switch. with country coach out of business i don’t have any idea where to get a new switch. any ideas??
I have a 1998 Nemar I bought used. Does anyone know where I can get a manual that shows the wiring diagrams and the exploded parts list to my steps?
Thanks
John
Hi John,
You should be able to find what you need at the Kwikee website.
Hi Jim,
Sorry for the late reply- 90% of the time those switches are a Kwikee item, and not provided by the coach builder.
I have a Kwikee 2 step on a Country Coach Motorhome. It’s a series 42 drawer type step. The small metal gear on the motor broke into two pieces. I and my dealer have tried to contact Kwikee about obtaining a new gear. We get a voice mail message and leave our message but no one has returned our calls. Is Kwikee still operating?
Chris, got a 95 Kwikee 2 step on an A class, bought the vehicle used, steps didn’t work, removed motor found linkage bound and broken, at the steps. That’s because the steps where seized, had to pry the steps down jus to extend them. Repaired linkage and checked motor operation all good there, but when hooked up to the stairs, after oiling everything, will only extend or retract it slightly cuz the stairs are still binding. Removed the whole stair assembly from vehicle and tried to soak and lubricate all the pivot points and bearing shaft, still not smooth. It almost has like a flat spot to it, it is difficult to move no matter what position but once u give it a push or pull it will move, looks like the main shaft is where the trouble is coming from any rebuild kits or bearing fixes for this, cus i see the ends are all welded on the outside of the shafts, and input would be great thanx, and great info site!!
Hey Chris, Walter again with that 95 2 step, after further investigating it is the bearing sleeve i guess u’d call it on the one end of the master shaft. The stair move freely which is only bout half an inch until that bearings sleeve’s little ear tab comes to end of the travel in it’s little notched out opening of the stair frame, from there is the shaft rotates hard on that end u can feel it. I guess other than just soakin it and workin it is there any repair kits for this or trick for freein that sleeve up, or has anyone else had trouble with these bearing sleeves before? Thanx for your time and in the previous message i meant to say any input would be great, sorry for the typo. Cheers.
Hi Walter,
I don’t know of any repair kits for that part- usually the whole “frame” is replaced. I would try just working it, maybe with something like B’laster, Kroil, or a home made solution of ATF and acetone (50/50).
Chris, On 7-14-09 you said you were coming up with a blog on the substitute parts for the nylon/plastic pieces in the Kwikee motor assembly. I could find no blog on that. I stepped on my Kwikee series 32 steps just before they locked and damaged the plastic blocks. Sure would like to replace them rather than the whole motor assembly. Thanks
Addition to yesterdays post. I looked at the Kragen part#74410 that was mentioned in a 1-6-08 post. It would not work in my Kwikee #9550 motor assembly (32 series Kwikee step) installed in a ’91 Pace Arrow. Those parts are about 1/2 inch in diameter. I assume they must be for the 90952000 motor listed as a replacement for my motor. My motor assembly uses much larger pieces. I assume Kwikee must have been aquired by another company…No response using web address and customer service number on the web is no longer connected.
What causes the steps to extend when driving? I did close the screen door and rv door and locked both of the locks on the door before driving off.
That is usually a problem with the door switch- either the door is moving enough that the switch gets activated, or there is a loose connection in that circuit.
Well, I have egg on my face. After my previous post, I looked at Ebay ads for the plastic pieces, I concluded that my plastic pieces were not larger, but just badly distorted from 19 years of use. I went back to Kragens and purchased the “Help” part #74410 for $7.99 and installed them. They are listed on the package as .595″ diameter and .429″ height and fit snuggly in the motor assembly. It now works just fine. Sorry if anyone was misled by the previous posts. I also found that a friend had obtained a kit to repair his Ford Bronco window motor (same unit as the Kwikee unit) which was Ford part # DOAZ-62234A24B. This kit contains the large gear driven by the worm gear of the motor, the plastic pins, the gear driven by the plastic pins and grease to lubricate the assembly when the parts have been replaced. Ebay had a kit containing the same parts as the Ford kit, several sellers with the plastic pins and many different Ford window motor assemblies if your actual motor is bad. Another post indicated that Kwikee is now using a sealed motor..I have no knowledge of that motor as my motorhome is a ’91 Pace Arrow with a 32 series step. Any questions, Email me at jldrees@comcast.net. Thanks for all of the help from folks that left previous posts.
i have a 1995 itasco suncruiser 37.5 ft tag axle motorhome with electric step . for some reason the actuator arm broke. Where can i purchase a arm for it in canada ? many thks. Oh it has 2 steps.
I have 1995 Itasca the auto step is just staying on can you point me in the wright derection to repair
kwikee step repair … Motor replacement There is a place called AM EQUIPTMENT MFG in jefferson, oregon that makes the new ones . the part number is 210-1009 RH they only charge $28.48 and ship it to you ups . Its the same one I had completly. The RV place here wanted to charge me $292 for this replacement. or else he look at the kit. I checked out the auto zone and nampa but theres is not the complete same. HECK OF A PRICE ISN’T IT.
I bought a 89 dolphin. the step did not work so i took the push button switch (door switch) out and touched the two wires together and the step worked. after i put a new switch in. the step goes down when the door is closed and goes up when the door is open. can anyone help?
I have a 95 Bounder, and on our last trip out end of April 2010 our 2 step step broke. The linkage from the drive post to the outer curved linkage broke in two. Question : can this be welded successfully? It looks like a poruse mag casting .—Is this part available to order? On a loose leaflet in the owners manual is a picture of ” Linkage Assemblies” dated 2/93 The pict showes item 7b the curved part attached to a straight section which is attached to the shaft. The part between the shaft and the curved piece is the part that broke. What is the most cost effective way to fix this ? Await your response on my E Mail address above. Date : 5/7/2010
Have older model Class C 1979 Shasta. Have replaced step motor and control about four years ago. Unit not used often. I lubricate the steps and they operate intermittly. Would work in the drive motion but not static. Its a 24 inch single step with a 909513 control unit and motor # REP 8511. Checked wiring to no avail. Then I tapped on the motot with a small hammer and it works a couple of times then quits. System not binding. The motor appears to be a sealed unit. Any suggestions ?
Thanks for the tip on that part #74410 from Kragens. It saved me 250.00 from RV shop. Put in those spacers and step is working great.
can someone help me please. have 2002 gulf stream class a with single step. when door is open, step comes out. when door is closed, step goes in. when turn switch inside door is off, step still goes in. checked ground and is well grounded. what next to keep step out when parked. have to remove magnet to keep step out. could off/on switch gone bad?
I just finished repairing the Kwikee electric steps on my 1991 Southwind using the information from other posters on this website. I have the 32 series (2 step) with the 9514 control (orange box). My step was stuck in the extended position while on a trip but I was able to remove the pin and manually retract the step and then tie it in the up position using a wire coat hanger. When I got home and examined the step I found a burnt relay in the control and the gear plugs in the electric motor were destroyed (motor would run but not turn the gears).
I first tried to contact Kwikee but found that they no longer talk directly to customers, only repair facilities and dealers. I then contacted two local dealers and both stated that I needed to replace both the control and the motor at a material cost of $300 (:this was for a Kwikee upgrade kit) and $150 labor or I could replace the entire step unit for around $500 and $100 labor. Both dealers said that both my control and motor were too old for repair or replacement.
I did a search on the Internet and found this website. Using the info from this website, I ordered a replacement control kit (909510003) from AnyRVParts on Ebay for $95 and bought replacement Ford WIndow Regulator Gear Plugs for $9 from Autozone. I rebuilt the electric motor and installed the new control and replaced the door switch with a normal open magnetic switch which was included in the kit. Total time required was about 16 hours.
Thanks for maintaining this website and sharing this info with us!!! You saved me a lot of money!!
Most of the Kwikee Step problems I read about here are worm-gear, linkage, or electrical related. My problem with a Kwikee 28 Series Single Step model is what appears to be a flawed gear. The larger 4-inch gear in the gear case loses chips from its teeth which causes the step to jam and freeze usually in the down position. Each time this happens (4 times at about 6-month intervals) I disassemble, clean, regrease and adjust the gear position to ensure only undamaged teeth are in contact with the smaller motor drive gear (only about a third of the 4-inch gear is used in the in-and-out operation of the step). I’ve also turned the gear over to use as many undamaged sections as possible and there are no longer any undamaged sections available. All other functions of the step’s operation work normally. Camping World attempted to order the gear or the gear case and linkage but Kwikee told them these are no longer available separately and that I would have to order a motor, gear box, linkage kit for $310 to solve my problem. Purchase of a new Series 28 step would cost me $700 they told me. I see prices for the 28 Series step from $289 to $310 on the Net but haven’t found a source for the gear or gear case and linkage kit.
Please contact me at jjsievers@juno.com if anyone has had a similar problem to mine and found a source for a 28 Series gear case and linkage.
Reference my June 27, 2010, post. I was successful in finding a gear case and linkage kit for my Series 28 Kwikee step at http://www.pplmotorhomes.com for $78.00. It arrived in only 4 days. A minor adjustment was necessary, however, the 3 motor anchoring bolts had to be replaced and 3 holes in the motor casting had to be enlarged to 15/64″. When I mounted it on the step and completed the electrical and linkage connections it worked like a charm.
I want to thank anyone who took their time researching my problem. And hope the above information helps anyone with a similar problem.
Have a 1997 Pace Arrow with Kwikee Series 32 step. My step has been out for a while and now won’t retract. If I reverse the wires (red and yellow) from the controller to the step motor it retracts. I then need to reverse the wires again to get the step to go out. Am I having a controller problem and it’s not reversing the polarity? Can someone help me out?
our kwikee electric one step upon retracting makes a clicking/clunking noise for approx 5 seconds…then stops….it has been properly lubed….any ideas on fixes for this issue? is there an external limit switch or is it all internal? thank you!!!
Had to repair the support for My Kwikee (series 32).
After replacing, everything works fine accept that on extention the motor continues to run. On extention the control arm is agains to gear housing.
It shuts off fine on retraction.
Is this a problem with the controler? or wiring? or in the gearbox?
HELP out of MONEY
Thank You!!!!
I guess Chris is busy, so for you that are interested. I found the problem.
At full extention before the step reaches the adjustable stops the step stops extending but the motor keeps trying to open. I believe that the large plastic gear in the gear box has a broken tooth at the point of full extention and is unable to the limit switch to take effect. So I adjusted the stops to stop the extention before the end of its travel. This enabled the pressure to the limit switch to be reached and turned the motor off, as it should be.
The step is working properly now, but I need to open the gear box and see if the gear can moved to a different position so the broken gear is no longer a concern.
Hope this helps some one.
